Tool Clearance Policy

Most tools at Protohaven require clearance before members can use them independently. Clearances demonstrate that members can use equipment properly, safely, and according to Protohaven standards and protocols.

Clearances can be obtained through:

Classes- Our classes are open to the public, and most classes provide clearances on the equipment and tools that are used in the class. The title of the class and the class description will note if a clearance is earned in the class. As a member, you receive 20% off classes, and this discount applies directly when you are logged into your account!

Private Instruction- This option is perfect for members who want one-on-one attention with an expert. Maybe you’ve never used a piece of equipment before, or maybe you have some experience and don’t want to take a whole class. These sessions are offered at $30 per half-hour. If a member uses a tool that they don't have clearance for, a reminder will be issued. If a member continues to use tools without proper clearance, Protohaven will explore membership suspension.

• Consumer Singer Sewing Machines (in the textiles cabinet)
• Hand tools behind the front desk (drills, electric sanders, nibbler, electric hand shear, reciprocating saw, grinders, circular saw)
